I have never had any luck with stick-on chair pads. Most nail-on pads are "glides" as opposed to felt.
These pads have a nail-on that looks kind of like half of a clothing snap (so there is little danger of splitting the wood) and felt that is very securely attached. They take minimal effort to attach and the felt has been holding up fine for many months.
I cannot figure out why these are not easier to find; we can't be the only people that need felt padding that is frustrated with the useless stick-on ones.

These felt pads are the best pads possible for your chairs. glue on pads fall off within days even with extra strength glue. plastic glides wear down and ruin marble and wood floors. These are the way to go!! Totally brilliant way to secure the felt onto your chairs. It is all one piece: a felt pad adhered onto a plastic disc which has a small round cookie cutter extension. It is not a nail!!! ...it is a round piece of metal that goes into the wood on the bottom of the chair leg with 2-3 taps of the hammer. works so fabulously well I am inserting them into all my chair legs! wish they would make bigger packages.
they need to re-name it from "nail-on".

There is no information about quantity on the package or Amazon description, so this should be helpful:
* Sixteen (16) 1-inch pads per package * Six (6) 2-inch pads per package * Four (4) 3-inch pads per package (Updated 2/22/12 by N.Porter)
(Apparently Amazon uses the same reviews for both sizes, so I'm including both here.)
Otherwise, these pads are very dense and should hold up to almost any load, including a couch with four people on it. The weakness is in the adhesive, since it won't stay on forever if you move your furniture around a lot. But for stationary things, they're almost perfect.

Felt Pads, Heavy Duty, Brown - could not find, to link. These go on the bottoms of chair legs to keep them from scratching your floor. Or mine.
I got them to protect the hardwood floor in my workroom. I have a swivel chair, and then two painted wood chairs. They had those stick-in, plastic, go-smooth-and-fast things on the bottoms of the legs, but when you slid them across the floor, they may not have scratched it, but the sound scratched my brain.
So, I removed the hard plastic no-scratch-go-fast things and stuck one of these on each (the stickum on these felt pads, so far, is very good) and zip-zap! all is smooth and quiet, too.
Bonus use: In my living room I have hardwood floors, too, and we have removed the oriental rug and put it someplace else while waiting to decide about a new rug or just let the old newspapers and magazines eventually make a floor covering. But at present, the coffee table is actually really scratching the floor, and... Read more

These felt pads are certainly heavy duty and quite thick, but therein lies the problem. The package describes usage as for appliances and small items that you need to protect your delicate surfaces from. Due to thickness and the limits of adhesion to the surface, placing these under table legs or couch feet isn't a long term solution. If you move the item, they will shear away from the surface. Felt designed for furniture is usually much thinner with a strong adhesive.
Bottom line: Great for lamps, small appliances, coasters, but not useful for furniture including couches/chairs/tables.

I have installed these on twelve different chairs, so I am clearly happy with how they work. After years of "stick ons" and other types of chair feet, these do a great job of keeping my wood and marble floors blemish free.
My only issue is that the instructions for installation are lousy. They read: - Drill a small pilot hole in the chair leg - Gently tap the glide into the leg
This is both vague and misleading, which can lead you to ruining one of the glides.
Pilot hole: If you drill too small of a hole, the nail binds in the hole and bends. If you drill too big of hole, the nail doesn't grab and the glide falls out if you pick up the chair. SOLUTION: Drill a 7/64" hole 5/8" of an inch deep. This is the same diameter as the nail, so it slides in easily, but the depth is shorter than the nail. So, when you tap it in the rest of the way, the nail bites into the wood. I put a piece of masking tap on my drill bit 5/8" from the... Read more

The swivel feet allow the felt to contact the floor surface fully vs just the edge of the felt pad. WARNING: You have to PRE-DRILL the leg holes to allow the nail studs to penetrate the hard woods of the chair legs. I also used a flat head nail drift / punch to drive the nails on the swivel pads to reduce damaging the swivel pad with a hammer. No big deal and worth the effort to do it right!! I am very anal that way.

We've got hardwood floors in our kitchen and have tried the little stick-on pads, only to have them fall off. These offer the same amount of protection, and are not going anywhere! I just ordered 3 more sets to use on the rest of my diningroom chairs.
